Hypnosis for "Problems of the mind"

I mentioned in a previous article that Hypnosis has a vast range of uses, this extends to problems that would normally be assumed to need strong prescribed medication. Take depression for instance. In many instances Hypnosis can be very effective in dealing with depression. The reason Hypnosis is so useful is that the therapist can quickly identify the cause of the problem. If the client has no conscious memory of the initial event, then trying to access it without Hypnosis is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. The same applies to problems like low self-esteem, anxiety, panic attacks, and phobias. In most cases these problems respond easily and quickly to hypnotherapy. Whereas with talk therapy it could take 6 months to a year of visits to find a solution. With Hypnosis, the results can be achieved in 2-5 visits, with a lot of cases achieving success with just one treatment session.

Another area where Hypnosis can be very effective in is the relief of pain. Long term pain can be significantly reduced and in many cases eliminated altogether. The results vary from client to client and some get relief for up to 3 months at a time, whilst others get rid of their pain permanently but as anyone who suffers chronic long term pain will tell you, any improvement is a great relief. Another aspect of pain is the fear of pain itself. In a lot of instances people are put off going to the doctor or the dentist because they are afraid of pain, eg. needles, drills, operations, etc. Again hypnosis can greatly reduce the fear and apprehension that these occasions present. A lot of the discomfort caused by injections, for example, is a result of the patient being tensed up in the first place. This produces a tightening of the muscles which increases the pain. By using Hypnosis to relax, the entire experience becomes much more comfortable.

Whatever the problem you are experiencing there is a very good chance that Hypnosis can help.

CHILDREN AND HYPNOSIS
(Published in City Wide News, Dublin, 23rd November 2009)

Being a child or a teenager in today's world is not easy. Life for young people has become ever more competitive. Pressure to do well at school and peer pressure to conform to whatever fashion or fad that happens to be doing the rounds at the moment combine to crank up the stress levels. Some children have to cope with bullying, either verbally or physically, some children have to cope with high levels of stress in the home as the recession puts pressure on parents. So how can hypnosis help?

Hypnosis can help in quite a few ways, for instance changing the way that they view exams, removing the fear that can cause a mental block just when they need a clear mind most. Hypnosis also helps with studying, making it much easier to concentrate when necessary and improving recall. Hypnosis can also help to reduce stress and fear simply by reframing the events that may have caused them to feel frightened.

Hypnosis can also be very helpful to children when it comes to problems with doctors and dentists. Some children are afraid of needles; this is obviously a problem when the time comes to get dental work done. Likewise, if the child needs medical attention involving injections it can cause unnecessary trauma for all concerned. Hypnosis can remove these fears quickly and easily. Habits like thumb-sucking can also play havoc with teeth and can be difficult to address. Once again, hypnosis provides a quick and easy solution to this. Bed-wetting is another problem that can be very distressing to parents and children alike yet one or two visits to a hypnotherapist can eradicate this problem for good.

The wonderful thing about hypnosis is that it is a non-invasive treatment so children have nothing to fear. There are many other applications for hypnosis with children. SMOKERS. WHY HYPNOSIS?
(Published in City Wide News, Dublin, 10th November 2009)

There are many ways to give up smoking. Most of them work in the short term and most of them fail in the long term. Why is this? Well let us have a look at some of them.

First up is willpower. Willpower is best described as mental adrenalin, it gives us that initial burst of determination to throw away the fag packet but as time passes it becomes harder to maintain the level of willpower needed to stay off the dreaded weed and while the level of willpower is dropping the craving for tobacco stays just as strong, the inevitable happens and you're back on the merry-go-round.

The same thing happens with nicotine patches or gum. You're taking nicotine to help you stop taking nicotine, make sense? I don't think so either. As soon as you stop taking the gum or wearing the patches back comes the craving and it's all downhill from there. Enter hypnosis. What's so different about hypnosis? The difference is that hypnotherapy removes the craving. I remember when I lived in London in the late 1980s I used to smoke one hundred cigarettes every day, I tried everything to quit, finally as a last resort I went to a hypnotist. I had one session with him and I have never smoked a cigarette since. That was back in 1990. When I left his clinic, I didn't feel like an ex-smoker. I felt as if I had never been a smoker. I have never suffered from cravings and I even tried to smoke a 'fag' once to test my mettle, but I couldn't get past the first drag.

Every smoker knows that every now and then you just want to be free of this monkey on your back. When you feel like that, it's the time to pick up the phone and change your life.

HYPNOSIS FOR PHOBIAS
(Published in City Wide News, Dublin, 28th October 2009)

Which one of us has never felt fear? Fear is a necessary part of our warning system, alerting us to impending danger and giving us that all important shot of adrenalin to help us out of a dodgy situation. That is normal fear. Phobic fear is something else again. This is a paralysing, nauseating, crippling fear. It gets into the marrow of one's bones, defying logic, neutralizing common sense and far from giving us that shot of adrenalin it seems to suck all control and ability out of us, leaving us helpless and terrified.

The really frustrating thing about phobias is that they don't make sense. What harm can a one inch spider do to a sixteen stone man? Obviously none! Yet that didn't stop me quivering like a baby when I spotted a tiny moving black spot on the wall during my days as an arachnophobic.

Logic and willpower are useless against phobic fear.
The simple beauty of hypnosis is that it deals directly with the subconscious mind, the seat of all our emotions. This allows us to uncover the original source of the fear. It may come from childhood, maybe when someone is as young as three or four. Once this has been uncovered it is a simple job to de-sensitize the memory, therefore removing the fear permanently. Whatever your phobia, there is only one fear and that is the fear of the fear.

There is no phobia that cannot be helped with hypnosis. People with a fear of flying are rarely afraid of crashing, or indeed afraid of dying, they are just terrified of flying which is to say they are afraid of the fear they experience once they begin to think about flying.

Flying is much safer than driving. In fact I read once that you have a greater chance of getting kicked to death by a donkey than you have of dying in a plane crash but it makes no difference to a person who fears flying. They have no control over that fear.
So there is a better way.

Don't live with your phobias. Banish them.

HYPNOSIS FOR THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY
(Published in City Wide News, Dublin, 2nd September 2009)

If you ask somebody, what is hypnosis? The answer will probably be, 'oh that's used for stopping smoking and losing weight'. Yes, it is excellent for both of these problems but it is so much more. Hypnotherapy is the best and fastest way to promote mind-body healing. Everything that happens to our bodies originates in the sub-conscious mind.

Hypnotherapy allows the negative or harmful programming in the subconscious mind to be removed and replaced with positive and healthy substitutes. Because of public awareness, hypnotherapy is much more widely used in America and the UK than in Ireland. Hypnosis for anaesthesia and analgesia in dental and surgical procedures is much more widely accepted and hopefully as people become more aware of the advantages of hypnosis, we will see a much wider interest in its many uses. Hypnosis is excellent for the treatment of phobias, depression, panic attacks, irritable bowel syndrome, eczema, warts, confidence, memory recall and many other problems.

Hypnosis is also very useful in helping to control pain, especially chronic pain. This can be done initially by direct hypnosis and then by teaching the clients to self-hypnotise, allowing them to be much more in control of their situation. This also applies to serious illnesses such as cancer where the use of hypnosis can assist with pain control resulting in a reduction of chemical pain relief. The therapist can also help the cancer patient with the psychological trauma of their illness, enabling them to develop a more positive mental attitude.

The benefits of hypnosis are too numerous to list fully here. So, why are people reluctant to try hypnotherapy?  Here are some of the misconceptions generally alluded to:-
‘I don’t want to loose control’ – You don’t. At all times you are fully aware of what is being said and done and you can halt the session at anytime you choose.
‘I’m afraid I’ll tell my secrets’ – Again, you are in control. The hypnotherapist can’t make you say or do anything against your will.
‘What happens if I get stuck in a trance’? – This is impossible. Firstly you are not in a trance, you are just deeply relaxed, so even if the therapist walked out in the middle of your session you would soon realise that he/she had stopped talking and come back to full awareness.

The IrishHypnosisAcademy has for the last four years been training top-class, highly motivated hypnotherapists, so the availability of good therapists is at an all time high.
Put them to good use. Change your life.
